RESUMO O presente trabalho relata o caso de aspergilose sistêmica em um cavalo da raça Quarto de Milha. O animal apresentava quadro de emagrecimento progressivo e alopecia. Os parâmetros avaliados durante o exame clínico encontravam-se de acordo com os valores normais para a espécie. No hemograma verificou-se leucocitose por neutrofilia, sem desvio à esquerda, proteínas plasmáticas totais elevadas e aumento do fibrinogênio, indicando um processo inflamatório acompanhado de desidratação. Os exames bioquímicos séricos demonstraram aumento no valor da ureia. Apesar dos exames realizados e da terapia instituída com antibióticos de amplo espectro e suporte nutricional, após 51 dias de internamento o quadro clínico evoluiu para caquexia e decúbito permanente do paciente, o qual foi submetido à eutanásia seguida de necropsia. Com base nos achados nos exames necroscópico e histopatológico, diagnosticou-se infecção sistêmica por Aspergillus sp., acometendo pulmões, fígado, rins, peritônio parietal e encéfalo. Dentre os fatores predisponentes à relatada infecção fúngica sistêmica, destaca-se o status imunológico debilitado do paciente, possivelmente proporcionado por tratamentos prolongados com antibióticos e anti-inflamatórios esteroidais. O presente trabalho relata o primeiro caso descrito de arpergilose sistêmica no Brasil. O diagnóstico definitivo só foi possível após necropsia e histopatologia, visto que os sinais clínicos inespecíficos não foram determinantes para o diagnóstico em vida.

ABSTRACT This paper reports the case of systemic aspergillosis on a Quarter Horse. The animal had progressive weight loss and alopecia. The parameters evaluated during the clinical examination were in agreement with the normal values for the species. The hemogram showed neutrophilic leukocytosis, without left-sided, elevated total plasma proteins and an increase in fibrinogen, indicating an inflammatory process accompanied by dehydration. Serum biochemical tests showed an increase in the value of urea. Despite the performed tests and established therapy with broad spectrum antibiotics and nutritional support, after 51 days of hospitalization the clinical condition evolved into cachexia and permanent decubitus of the patient which underwent to euthanasia and necropsy. From the findings of necropsy and histopathology, systemic infection was diagnosed by Aspergillus sp., affecting the lungs, liver, kidneys, parietal peritoneum and encephalon. Among the factors predisposing to the reported systemic fungal infection, the patient's weakened immune status is highlighted, possibly due to prolonged antibiotic and steroidal anti-inflammatory treatments. This paper reports the first case described of systemic aspergillosis in Brazil. Definitive diagnosis was only possible after necropsy and histopathology, since nonspecific clinical signs were not determinant for the diagnosis in life.

RESUMO O presente trabalho objetivou comparar o efeito do flunixin meglumine, cetoprofeno e meloxicam no tratamento da dor pós-operatória de ovinos submetidos à implantação de cânula ruminal e orquiectomia. Foram utilizados 32 ovinos, machos, pesando em média 35,5±3,5kg, distribuídos em três grupos: GFlu (flunixin meglumine 1,1mg/kg i.v.), GCet (cetoprofeno 3,0mg/kg i.v.) e GMel (meloxicam 0,5mg/kg i.v.). Exame clínico e coletas de sangue foram realizados no M0 (pré-avaliação), M1 (10 minutos após a pré-avaliação), M2 (início da sutura para fixação da cânula ruminal), M3 (logo após o término da cirurgia) e em duas, 12, 23, 25, 48 e 72 horas após a cirurgia (M2h, M12h, M23h, M25h, M48h e M72h), quando foram avaliados cortisol, glicose, proteína total, albumina, γ-glutamiltransferase (GGT), aspartato aminotransferase (AST), creatina quinase (CK), ureia, creatinina e hemograma. Nos M2h, M12h, M23h, M25h e M48h, foi realizada avaliação comportamental. O GFlu apresentou maior concentração de cortisol no M12h e no M48h e maior escore de dor na fístula e no testículo no M12h, quando comparado ao GMel. Os animais do GCet apresentaram menor interação com outros membros da baia no M23h. A ação analgésica do meloxicam foi maior em animais submetidos à implantação de cânula ruminal e orquiectomia, quando comparado ao flunixin meglumine e ao cetoprofeno.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to compare the effect of flunixin meglumine, ketoprofen, and meloxicam in the treatment of postoperative pain in sheep submitted to ruminal cannulation and orchiectomy. 32 sheep were submitted to implantation of rumen cannula and orchiectomy, divided into three groups: GFlu (Flunixin meglumine 1,1mg/kg i.v.); GCet (Ketoprofen 3,0mg/kg i.v.); GMel (Meloxicam 0,5mg/kg i.v.). Clinical examination and blood samples were performed at M0 (pre-evaluation), M1 (10 minutes after pre-evaluation), M2 (beginning ruminal cannula), M3 (immediately post-surgery), and M2h, M12h, M23h, M25h, M48h and M72h (2h, 12h, 23h, 25h, 48h and 72 hours post-surgery) with the evaluation of cortisol, glucose, total protein, albumin, γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), urea, creatinine and blood count. At M2h, M12h, M23h, M25h and M48h a behavioral evaluation was performed. The GFlu showed higher concentration of cortisol at M12h and M48h and greater pain score related with fistula and testis procedures at M12h when compared to GMel. Animals in the GCet group presented lower interaction with other animals in the same M23h paddock. The analgesia provided by Meloxicam was higher than flunixin meglumine and ketoprofen in animals submitted to placement of ruminal cannula and orchiectomy.

RESUMO As lesões dos meniscos são uma das principais causas de dor e claudicação em equinos. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a morfometria dos meniscos da articulação femorotibial de equinos. Foram utilizados 48 meniscos de 12 animais de ambos os sexos, com idade entre cinco e 15 anos e com peso entre 400kg e 500kg. A medida da extensão periférica compreendeu desde a parte mais cranial à mais caudal e denominou-se circunferência externa (CE). A margem interna, com o mesmo tratamento, foi chamada de circunferência interna (CI). Os meniscos foram divididos em terços craniais, médios e caudais. A espessura foi obtida nos pontos médios de cada terço. Foi calculada a área dos meniscos em contato com os côndilos femorais. O menisco medial apresentou maior CE com média de 126,38mm, enquanto o menisco lateral apresentou média de 115,32mm. O menisco lateral mostrou maior espessura nos terços médio e caudal, com valores médios de 16,00mm e 19,85mm, respectivamente, contra 13,75mm e 14,99mm dos meniscos mediais. Os resultados deste estudo mostraram relação importante entre os dados morfométricos e os achados clínicos na tentativa de explicar a maior incidência de lesões envolvendo o menisco medial.

ABSTRACT Meniscal lesions are one of the main causes of pain and lameness in horses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphometry of the meniscus of the femorotibial joint of horses. 48 meniscus were used from 12 animals, aged between five and 15 years and weighing between 400kg and 500kg. The measurement of the peripheral extension went from the most cranial part to the most caudal, denominated external circumference (CE). The internal margin, with the same treatment, was called internal circumference (IC). The meniscus was divided into cranial, middle and caudal thirds. The thickness was obtained at the midpoints of each third. The area of the meniscus in contact with the femoral condyles was also calculated. The medial meniscus presented a higher CE with a mean of 126.38mm, while the lateral meniscus presented a mean of 115.32mm. The lateral meniscus showed greater thickness in the middle and caudal thirds, with mean values of 16.00mm and 19.85mm respectively, against 13.75mm and 14.99mm of the medial meniscus. The results of this study showed an important relationship between the morphometric data and the clinical findings in an attempt to explain the higher incidence of lesions involving the medial meniscus.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito metafilático de minerais traços e vitaminas A e E injetáveis, em parâmetros do estresse oxidativo e na função de neutrófilos em fêmeas da raça Holandesa no período de transição. Sessenta animais foram divididos em dois grupos: animais que receberam minerais traços e vitaminas A e E injetáveis (GMTV) (n= 30) e grupo controle (GC) (n= 30). Não houve diferença significativa entre os grupos nos parâmetros avaliados, porém observou-se diferença significativa entre tratamento e dia para os valores da SOD, com maior atividade dessa enzima em fêmeas GMTV, nas semanas próximas ao parto. Observou-se diferença de dia e para interação tratamento e dia para o TBARS, em que fêmeas GMTV mostraram menores valores de TBARS em todos os momentos, exceto sete dias após o parto. Houve efeito significativo de dia para leucócitos, interação tratamento e dia para neutrófilos e interação tratamento e dia para fagocitose de neutrófilos, em que as fêmeas GMTV apresentaram valores menores de leucócitos e neutrófilos próximo ao parto, além de maior fagocitose de neutrófilos. Pode-se observar que houve melhora no sistema oxidativo e imune de fêmeas GMTV, resposta que provavelmente está relacionada com a administração dos minerais traços e vitaminas A e E.

ABSTRACT This study evaluates the metaphylactic of the subcutaneous administration of a trace minerals and vitamins A and E, on the oxidative stress and neutrophil function in Holsteins cows under the transition period. Sixty females were divided in two groups: group with trace minerals and vitamins (GMTV) (n= 30) and group control (GC) (n= 30). There was no significant difference between those groups; however, we find significant difference between treatment and day for Superoxide dismutase (SOD) values with higher activity of this enzyme in females GMTV on the weeks next to the parturition. Still, there was difference on day and, for interactions between treatment and day for TBARS, were females GMTV showed lower values of TBARS in all moments, except on day seven after the parturition. For leucocytes, there is a significant effect by day, interaction on treatment and day on neutrophils, and interaction treatment and day for neutrophil phagocytosis, were females GMTV showed lower values of leucocytes and neutrophils next to the parturition, and an increase of neutrophils phagocytosis. In summary, cows from the GMTV group had an improvement on the immune and oxidative systems, probably correlated with the administration of this supplement.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar resposta inflamatória e concentrações de proteínas em líquido peritonealde asininas submetidas à ovariectomia por laparotomia e laparoscopia. Foram utilizadas 18 fêmeas adultas, pesando em média 100kg, as quais foram divididas em dois grupos, de nove animais cada: o grupo I, em que foram ovariectomizadas por laparotomia, e o grupo II por laparoscopia. Após as cirurgias, em ambos os grupos foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis no líquido peritoneal: pH, densidade, número de hemácias, leucócitos e proteínas de fase aguda (fibrinogênio, haptoglobina, albumina, antitripsina, alfa-1 glicoproteína ácida, ceruloplasmina, transferrina, imunoglobulinas A e G). Todas as variáveis foram analisadas antes das cirurgias, 12, 24, 48, 72 horas, oito e 16 dias após os procedimentos cirúrgicos. O número de hemácias e leucócitos aumentou 24 horas depois das cirurgias nos dois grupos. Haptoglobina, alfa-1 glicoproteína ácida,albumina, transferrina, gamaglobulinas A, G e proteínas totais aumentaram nos dois grupos. As concentrações de ceruloplasmina não variaram enquanto a antitripsina não foi detectada no líquido peritoneal de asininos.Foi identificada uma proteína com23.000kD, que não tem denominação nem descrição no líquido peritoneal de asininos.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the inflammatory response and protein concentrations in the peritoneal fluid of donkeys submitted to laparotomy and laparoscopic ovariectomy. Eighteen adult females, weighing on average 100kg, were divided into two groups, of 09 animals each, where in group I, they were ovariectomized by laparotomy and group II by laparoscopy. Following the surgeries, the following variables were evaluated in the peritoneal fluid: pH, density, number of red cells, leukocytes and acute phase proteins (fibrinogen, haptoglobin, albumin, antitrypsin, alpha-1 acid glycoprotein, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, Immunoglobulins A and G). All variables were analyzed before the surgeries, 12, 24, 48, 72 hours, 8 and 16 days after the surgical procedures. The number of red cells and leukocytes increased 24 hours after the surgeries in both groups. Haptoglobin, alpha-1 acid glycoprotein, albumin, transferrin, gammaglobulins A and G, and total proteins increased in both groups. Concentrations of ceruloplasmin did not change while antitrypsin was not detected in the asinine peritoneal fluid. A protein of 23,000kD, which has no name or description in the peritoneal liquid of donkeys, has been identified.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa avaliou a dinâmica dos leucócitos e das subpopulações de linfócitos em vacas Holandesas soropositivas para o BLV no período de transição. Amostras de sangue (n=72) provenientes de 12 vacas foram coletadas entre as semanas -2 e +3 para a realização do leucograma, imunofenotipagem, dosagem de cortisol e haptoglobina (Hp). O perfil leucocitário foi caracterizado por leucocitose, neutrofilia, monocitose e eosinopenia próximo ao parto. Linfocitose e elevada proporção de linfócitos B CD21+ foram achados constantes entre as semanas -2 e +3; assim, as vacas foram testadas e confirmadas soropositivas para o BLV. Os valores das subpopulações de linfócitos T apresentaram-se baixos durante o período de transição, observando-se dois picos máximos que coincidiram com as elevações nas concentrações de cortisol no parto (2,11µg/dL) e semana +3 (1,97µg/dL). Hp apresentou aumento crescente de -2 (166µg/mL) a +3 (576µg/mL), provavelmente associada à elevada taxa de infecções uterinas observadas nas semanas +2 e +3. As vacas soropositivas para o BLV apresentaram leucograma de estresse próximo ao parto, exceto para linfócitos. A linfocitose e as elevadas proporções de células B CD21+, associadas com as baixas proporções de células T, podem ser indicativo de imunossupressão e predisposição aos processos inflamatórios no período pós-parto.

ABSTRACT This research evaluated the dynamics of leukocytes and lymphocytes subsets in seropositive Holstein cows for BLV during the transition period. Blood samples (n=72) from 12 cows were harvested from week -2 up to week +3 to perform leukogram, immunophenotyping, cortisol and haptoglobin (Hp). Leukocytes pattern was characterized by leukocytosis, neutrophilia, monocytosis and eosinopenia around calving. Lymphocytosis and high proportions of B cells CD21+ were a constant finding between week -2 and +3, thus cows were tested and confirmed seropositive for BLV. The values of T lymphocytes subsets were low during the transition period, observing two peaks that coincided with high levels of cortisol at delivery (2.11µg/dL) and week +3 (1.97µg/dL). Hp had gradual increase from week -2 (166µg/mL) until week +3 (576g/mL) probably due to high rate of uterine infection detected between week +2 and +3. The seropositive cows for BLV presented stress leukogram around delivery, except for lymphocytes. Lymphocytosis and the high proportions of B cells, associated with the low proportions of T lymphocytes, can be indicative of immunosuppression and predisposition to the inflammatory process observed in the post-partum period.

ABSTRACT This paper describes a case of malignant melanoma in brown coat horse, which had ataxia and proprioceptive deficits in hind limbs, progressing to permanent decubitus. The animal was euthanized and the final diagnosis was based on necropsy and histopathology. At necropsy different masses and / or nodules in skeletal muscle, bone, abdominal cavity, lungs, heart, spleen, liver, adrenal gland, lymph nodes, brain and cerebellum were found. Neurological clinical signs presented by the animal were justified by spinal cord compression caused by melanocytic mass invading the medullary canal of the flow segment of the thoracic spine (between 15th and 18th thoracic vertebrae). This is the first case report of melanoma leading to spinal cord compression in a non-gray horse. Thus, it is important to include this neoplasm in the differential diagnosis list of cutaneous and subcutaneous masses and / or nodules, and in suspected cases of spinal cord compression in horses of any coat.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate a new source of injectable organic zinc (zinc edetate) on the energy and oxidative profile in sheep during the immediate postpartum period. Twenty-six Texel breed animals were previously identified and divided into two experimental groups: the treated group (TG; n= 13) that comprised the animals that received a subcutaneous (SC) injection of 100 mg of zinc edetate (2 mL) fifteen days before the parturition expected date and the control group (CG; n=13) that comprised the animals that received 2mL of physiological solution at the same date of TG. Blood samples were collected on the parturition day for the assessment of serum fructosamine, cholesterol and triglycerides, insulin-like growth factor type 1 (IGF-1), the oxidative stress index (OSi) and blood zinc concentration. In addition to these parameters, the measurement of zinc was made in food given to the animals. There was no difference in metabolic parameters and OSi between the experimental groups (P>0.05), as well as in blood zinc concentrations (P>0.05). The parenteral zinc edentate does not change the energy and oxidative profile of sheep in immediate postpartum.

RESUMO Avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação com colina protegida sobre o perfil energético, as enzimas hepáticas e a reprodução de vacas leiteiras no periparto. Quinze vacas leiteiras foram divididas em dois grupos experimentais: oito receberam 80 gramas de colina protegida por 21 dias no pré-parto e por 40 dias no pós-parto e sete foram consideradas controle. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas nos dias 10, 20, 30 e 60 pós-parto para avaliação dos perfis energético e hepático. Aos 60 dias pós-parto, realizou-se exame ginecológico dos animais para avaliação da saúde reprodutiva. A suplementação com colina protegida não alterou os níveis de beta-hidroxibutirato (BHBA), ácidos graxos não esterificados (AGNE), frutosamina, fator de crescimento semelhante a glicose I (IGF-I), status oxidante total (TOS), aspartato aminotransferase (AST) e gamaglutamiltransferase (GGT) no pós-parto. Não houve diferença também quanto à produção de leite. Aos 60 dias pós-parto, vacas suplementadas com colina protegida apresentaram menor número de casos de endometrite que vacas do grupo controle. A suplementação de colina protegida não alterou o perfil bioquímico e a produção de leite, mas reduziu o número de casos de endometrite no pós-parto de vacas leiteiras.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation with protected choline on the energy profile, liver enzymes and reproduction in dairy cows in peripartum. Fifteen cows were divided into two groups: 8 received 80 grams of protected choline for 21 days pre-partum and 40 days postpartum, and 7 were considered control. Blood samples were collected on days 10, 20, 30, and 60 postpartum to evaluate the energy and hepatic profiles. After 60 days postpartum a gynecological examination of animals for evaluation of reproductive health was done. The supplementation with choline protected did not alter the beta-hydroxybutyrate levels (BHBA), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), fructosamine, like growth factor glucose (IGF-I), total oxidant status (TOS), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and glutamiltrasferase range (GGT) postpartum. There was no difference in milk production. After 60 days postpartum, cows fed protected choline had fewer cases of endometritis that cows in the control group. The protected choline supplementation did not alter the biochemical profile and milk production, but reduced the number of endometritis cases in postpartum dairy cows.

RESUMO A utilização de plantas com fins medicinais para tratamento, cura e prevenção de doenças é considerada uma das mais antigas formas de prática medicinal da humanidade. O presente estudo teve como objetivo identificar as espécies de plantas medicinais usadas dentro da comunidade de Cajueiro da Praia, Piauí, bem como a parte da planta utilizada, o modo de preparo, a sua importância relativa, o valor de uso e o consenso em relação às propriedades terapêuticas das espécies citadas. Foram aplicadas 12 entrevistas semiestruturadas com especialistas locais indicados, utilizando o método de amostragem por “bola-de-neve” e a técnica de “turnê-guiada” para coleta das espécies citadas. Análises quantitativas tais como Valor de Uso, Importância Relativa e Fator de Consenso dos Informantes foram associadas à análises qualitativas. As coletas botânicas seguiram a metodologia usual. Foram citadas 43 espécies, distribuídas em 24 famílias botânicas, sendo Lamiaceae a mais representada em número de espécies (oito espécies), seguida de Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae e Rutaceae (todas com três). Chenopodium ambrosioides L. (mastruz) obteve o maior valor de uso (VU=1,58), sendo portanto, a planta com elevado potencial de uso para a comunidade. Quanto ao uso terapêutico, observou-se que um maior número de espécies foi indicado no combate à gripe, seguido por má digestão. O IR demonstrou que planta mais versátil foi Chenopodium ambrosioides L. (mastruz), com IR=2, referido em cinco categorias de uso e o FCI apontou que os sistemas corporais que apresentam maior importância local são: sistema circulatório (FCI=0,57), seguido por lesões e consequências de causas externas (FCI=0,50), sistema endócrino (FCI=0,50) e respiratório (FCI=0,40). No âmbito geral, verificou-se que a diversidade de plantas medicinais conhecida e a obtenção das plantas na comunidade estudada sugerem uma correlação entre uso/conhecimento de plantas medicinais e disponibilidade das mesmas; que a flora medicinal é representada, em boa parte, por plantas exóticas cultivadas nos quintais e que a transmissão do conhecimento tradicional feito localmente e por via oral demonstra uma herança cultural na cidade.

ABSTRACT The use of medicinal plants for the purposes of treating, curing and preventing diseases is considered one of the oldest forms of humanity’s medical practices. This study aimed to identify the species of medicinal plants used in the Cajueiro da Praia community, Piauí state, the part of the plant used, the method of preparation, their relative importance, the use value and the consensus on the therapeutic properties of the species mentioned. 12 semi-structured interviews with indicated local experts were performed, using the “snow-ball” sampling method and the “guided tour” technique to collect the aforementioned species by a standardized method. Quantitative analyzes such as Use value, relative importance and informant consensus factor were performed alongside qualitative analyzes. 43 species belonging to 24 botanical families were cited, Lamiaceae being the most represented in number of species (eight species) followed by Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae and Rutaceae (with three each). Chenopodium ambrosioides L. (mastruz) had the highest use value (UV = 1.58), and therefore was the plant with the highest potential for use by the community. For therapeutic use, it was observed that a greater number of species have been shown to combat influenza, followed by maldigestion. The RI showed that the most versatile plant was Chenopodium ambrosioides L. (mastruz) with RI = 2, found in five usage categories and the ICF pointed out that the bodily systems that have greater local importance are: the circulatory system (ICF = 0.57), followed by lesions and consequences by external causes (ICF = 0.50), the endocrine (ICF = 0.50), and the respiratory system (ICF = 0.40). Within the general framework, it was found that the diversity of known medicinal plants and plants obtained from the population studied, suggested a correlation between the use/knowledge of medicinal plants and the availability there of; the medicinal flora is largely represented by exotic plants that are grown in backyards andby the transmission of traditional knowledge made locally and orally demonstrates a cultural heritage in the city.

RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou realizar o inventário das plantas medicinais de uma comunidade rural maranhense, analisando o valor de uso e a importância relativa das espécies, assim como o consenso dos informantes quanto às doenças tratadas. Foram realizadas 50 entrevistas semiestruturadas utilizando-se o método de amostragem “bola-de-neve” e usou-se a técnica “turnê-guiada” para coletar as espécies citadas. Os especialistas locais citaram 63 espécies pertencentes a 44 famílias, das quais Fabaceae, Apocynaceae, Lamiaceae e Myrtaceae apresentaram o maior número de espécies. A planta que obteve maior valor de uso foi Morinda citrifolia L.. Himatanthus drasticus (Müll.Arg.) Woodson foi a espécie que apresentou maior importância relativa. Dentre os sistemas corporais tratados com os recursos vegetais, os que obtiveram maior consenso entre os informantes foram os relacionados às doenças do estômago, esôfago e duodeno e infecções virais caracterizadas por lesões na pele (ambas com FCI = 0,83). Em virtude da riqueza de conhecimento sobre plantas medicinais em um Estado do Brasil onde o sistema de saúde é bastante precário e onde os estudos de cunho etnobotânico ainda são escassos, sugere-se que novos estudos etnobotânicos sejam realizados afim de evidenciar a dinâmica de conhecimento local e suas implicações ecológicas e sociais.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to conduct an inventory of medicinal plants in a rural community in Maranhão, analyzing the use value and the relative importance of species as well as the consensus of the informants about the treated diseases. Fifty semi-structured interviews were conducted using the sampling method “snow-ball” and the technique “guided tour” was employed in order to collect the species mentioned. Local experts mentioned 63 species belonging to 44 families, from which Fabaceae, Apocynaceae, Lamiaceae and Myrtaceae represented the highest number of species. The plant which had the highest use value was the Morinda citrifolia L.. The Himatanthus drasticus (Müll.Arg.) Woodson was the species with the highest relative importance. Among the body systems treated with plant resources, those who had the most consensus among the informants were related to stomach, esophagus and duodenum diseases and viral infections characterized by skin lesions (both ICF = 0.83). Because of the abundance of knowledge about medicinal plants in this state of Brazil, where the health system is quite precarious and where the nature of ethnobotanical studies are still scarce, it is suggested that new ethnobotanical studies are conducted in order to show the dynamics of local knowledge and its ecological and social implications.

AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel samples were nitrided by cathodic cage technique with addition of methane in the atmosphere aiming to reduce chromium nitride precipitation, to increase hardness and wear resistance without the presence of characteristic defects inherent to the ionic nitriding process. Microhardness measurements and X-ray analysis confirm the formation of a high hardness double-layer constituted by two regions: one internal region composed of carbon and another composed of nitrogen.

Amostras cilíndricas de aço inoxidável martensítico AISI 420 foram nitretadas ionicamente usando blindagens elétricas. Elas foram nitretadas nas temperaturas de 623, 673 e 773 K, durante 5 horas. Nessa técnica as amostras são colocadas num potencial flutuante, dentro de uma gaiola que blinda o potencial catódico. Um estudo sistemático foi realizado para avaliar a eficiência desta técnica sobre a eliminação do efeito de borda, quando comparado com a nitretação iônica convencional. As amostras nitretadas por essa nova técnica apresentaram taxa de nitretação, fases cristalinas e durezas, semelhantes àquelas nitretadas convencionalmente. Porém, foi possível eliminar completamente os anéis de erosão, comumente existentes nas amostras tratadas convencionalmente, os quais surgem devido a efeitos de bordas.
